In a vigil on Thursday March 7, 2024, UNC Arab Student Organization projects the names of dead Palestinian children onto South building. When asked to define the nature of her work, Lilly said “It is love; it is hope…building a sustained relationship, having solidarity, empowering communities.”

Police wrench protesters to the ground on the quad on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. That morning, they raided the encampment, detaining 30 people and arresting 6. At a rally later that day, protesters hoisted a Palestinian flag onto UNC’s flag pole, whereupon UNC Interum Chancellor Lee Roberts marched a squadron of officers into the quad to take it down. The police violently tore through the crowd of students to reach the flag and later deployed pepper spray.

Junior Lauren Rhodes studies journalism and economics at UNC. “When I’m in a rut, adventuring outside of my comfort zone is the biggest thing that empowers me. We only get one life, so why would I waste it trying to learn what I already know,” she says.
