“My brother came howling inside. Said there was a copperhead in the yard. We ran out, and sure enough, there it was, curled loosely in a warm patch of sunlight, absorbing heat through its skin. It had a thick bullish head, diamond eyes stamped down its back.”

“My mother would take baths when her marriage wasn’t going right. I don’t well remember what my parents used to say to each other, riled up in the kitchen, but I never forgot the draining of it, the way my mother looked coming up the stairs afterwards. I knew by the soft footfalls on the carpet, the tightness between her eyes. Back then, she never cried in front of me, just started the bathtub, the bright water thundering her clean.”
